Prequel

This autobiography, set in 1980's Spain, wittily recalls the chaos and farce of a one year sabbatical with a young family. Co-written with her husband, the book is a prequel to Jani’s acclaimed Corfu Trilogy.

Flying home to England for the birth of their son after two idyllic years in Cyprus, their cottage and all their possessions are lost in a suspicious fire. Uninsured, Jeremy singlehandedly builds a wonderful new home on their land.
Three years later, still desperately homesick for the climate, food and lifestyle of the Mediterranean, they decide to sell up and move abroad for a year.
Their plans unravel from the start: Jeremy delivers their new boat to Spain, contracting chickenpox en route, and is arrested for suspected drug running.
Jani flies out to Spain with five year-old Rory, three month-old Miranda, two fragile grandparents, a young nanny and a mountain of luggage.
A picturesque 200 year-old finca, set alone amongst the scented orange and almond groves near the sleepy village of Jesús Pobre, is purchased for a song.
In such a wonderfully tranquil setting, the family can safely relax and settle into their delightful new surroundings for the next twelve months.
Fate, however, has different ideas and it is not too long before burglars, intrigue and a local vendetta intervene to turn their lives upside down.
'Thoughtfully written with delightful
humour, candour and affection’
